How much does a pattern maker cost?
Published prices for a first production pattern run from about $200 to $1,500 in the US, £50 to £500 or more in the UK and €150 to €700 in France, set by the garment, with grading usually charged on top, per size. Here it is a fixed price set by the garment’s complexity, for one size and one revision, drafted from your photo or sketch, without fittings: $29, $59 or $129.

Read the ranges for what they are: a starting price assumes a clear brief and a simple garment, and an hourly rate becomes a price only once the hours are counted. Ask what is included before you compare.
What moves the price
Two patterns for "a dress" can differ by a factor of five. The quote follows the work:
- The number of pieces. A T-shirt is a handful of pieces; a lined tailored jacket is dozens, each with notches that must meet.
- What you bring. A measured sample or a complete tech pack is quicker to draft from than a photo or a sketch, and the pattern maker prices the guesswork.
- Fit rounds. The first pattern is corrected after the first sample; ask how many corrections the price includes.
- Grading. Each extra size is drafted from the base size, and many makers price it per size.
- The file. A production pattern for a factory is a digital file, usually DXF, with seam allowances, notches and grainlines; a home-sewing paper pattern is a different deliverable.
What to send a pattern maker
A clear brief lowers the quote and the number of corrections:
- The flat sketch, front and back, with every seam, pocket and closure drawn.
- Photos of a reference garment if you have one, worn and laid flat.
- The base size and its key measurements: chest or bust, waist, hip, length, sleeve.
- The fabric: its type, weight and stretch, because ease depends on it.
- What you need delivered: the file format, seam allowances, grading, and a tech pack or not.
A fixed price per garment, set by its complexity
Here the price does not depend on a negotiation. Drop a photo or a sketch of the garment: it is read, its pattern pieces are counted, and the pattern tier follows. A professional pattern maker then cuts the production pattern in your base size as an AAMA/ASTM DXF-2 file, with one revision.
| Tier | Pattern pieces | For example | Fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple | 2 to 6 | T-shirt, tank top, basic skirt | $29 |
| Standard | 7 to 15 | Hoodie, dress, trousers | $59 |
| Complex | 16 and more | Tailored blazer, coat, lined gown | $129 |
Grading across your sizes is an add-on at $15, the factory tech pack an add-on at $10, the marker layout an add-on at $10 and seam allowances in the files an add-on at $5. A first fit sample in one size usually needs none of them.
When a local pattern maker is the better choice
- Couture and tailoring where the pattern is fitted on a person over several sessions.
- Shoes, bags, hats, knitwear programs and lingerie, each a craft with its own tooling.
- A long working relationship across a whole collection, with fittings in the same room as the sample.
See the tier and the price of your garment first
Drop a photo or a sketch. The flat sketch, the piece count and the pattern quote come back in about twenty seconds; you pay for the pattern only if you order it.
Questions
How much does a pattern cost for a simple garment?
On the price lists read on 19 October 2026, a T-shirt or a basic top starts at about $200 to $250 in the US and about £50 to £80 in the UK. Here a simple garment of 2 to 6 pieces is $29.
Does the price include grading?
Rarely, and here it does not: grading is an add-on at $15, ordered with the pattern. Ask any pattern maker whether their price is for one size or for a size range.
Who decides the tier of my garment here?
The system, from the garment: $29 for 2 to 6 pieces, $59 for 7 to 15, $129 for 16 and more. The quote on the page is an estimate from the image, and the order confirms the tier before you pay.
What file will I get?
An AAMA/ASTM DXF-2 file, the apparel standard cutting systems import without redrawing: closed pieces, notches, grainlines, piece names and cut quantities.
How long does a pattern take?
Here, within 48 hours for a simple garment, 72 hours for a standard one and 5 days for a complex one, counted from the moment a pattern maker claims the order.
