Chiffon fabric guide
Chiffon Trench Coat Design with AI
A chiffon trench coat is a specialist order: ask for chiffon at 30 to 70 g/m², and expect fewer mills to take it on.
It is the lightest of the 13 cloths this guide lists for this cut; organza comes next.
Next to organza, it is lighter and more fluid.

How chiffon behaves on a trench coat
In a trench coat it gives a soft, unstructured shoulder; the fronts need a fusible or a canvas to keep a lapel.
Cut long, a fluid cloth pools and trails, and its weight pulls the hem down, so it is hung for a day before hemming.
It wears cool, which makes it a spring and summer fabric.
It wants a cold hand wash and drying flat, so say so on the care label.
It frays and snags easily and is hard to sew, so seams are kept narrow and few.
About chiffon
Chiffon is a sheer, lightweight plain weave made from twisted yarns that give it a slightly rough, matte hand and a floating drape. It is woven in silk or in polyester.
Silk chiffon is woven mainly in China and Italy; polyester chiffon is made everywhere and is far easier to handle.
It is almost always lined or layered, because a single layer is see-through.
Cutting, sewing and color
Cut it on tissue paper, sew with a 60/8 needle and finish with narrow rolled hems; it usually needs a lining.
It is sheer, so the lining or the skin beneath changes how the shade reads.
It has a soft sheen that shows the folds without glare.
